it snowed here during the week, and i caught a cold. nothing too bad, but enough to keep me in for the weekend. it was almost just as well, since i could do stuff like reinstall windows on my computer, and print up new business cards, etc.
anyway, apart from watching television and sitting in front of the computer a lot, i also:
- finally made miso soup that tasted right for the first time. next time i'm gonna try adding some kelp into the broth, i think that will make it extra flavorful
- made a nice but simple stir fry of potatoes, ground chicken and onions. this is a first step in trying to replicate some of the stuff i eat at school - i followed a recipe where you start with oil in the pan and end up adding sake and mirin (cooking wine), covering, then adding soy sauce later. sake + mirin + soy is kind of the base of most japanese cooking, i think, so i just need to experiment a bit with how to get the broth right when it all cooks down.
- realized that cucumbers are very good.
- discovered the joy of furikake - these are just little packets of stuff you can sprinkle on top of rice. it's only 100 yen for a decent sized pouch, you toss it on rice and it tastes great!! it's like seaweed, dried salmon, and other stuff, although of course there are many different varieties
i took no pictures of any of this stuff, it's not like it's that mind blowing, but maybe next time!
